I’ve been obsessed with making my friends and family homemade gifts for the holidays this year. I love giving gifts and have been thinking of small tokens I can give to brighten someone's day just a little. This lead me to think of some of my most reliable products I use in the kitchen, things I always make sure to have on hand and reach for regularly. Something like my favourite American export: Trader Joe’s Everything but the Bagel Spice. If you live in Canada, you know it’s nearly impossible to find a good dupe and heading to the border isn’t an easy option so I’ve decided to make my own and make it better! And thus, the Better Bagel Spice was born.

Bagel spice is a combination of various seeds and sprinkles and can be used to top or garnish a variety of dishes. I love using it on avocado, eggs, salad, yogurt or fresh cucumbers and tomatoes in the summer. This simple blend gives the most perfect salty, crunchy, spicy flavour to just about anything.

With just a short trip to the bulk food store or pantry, you too can be making all your favourite people the best bagel spice seasoning. This recipe is naturally vegan and gluten free but wouldn’t be great for anyone with a sesame allergy. It takes literally 15 minutes to make and gives you more time to enjoy the holiday season! Feel free to play around and add some additional herbs or spices to the mix, I love adding seaweed, sumac or nettle for an extra boost of flavor and nutrients.
