Welcome to my new series called Snack Break where I interview people I find interesting about their snacking habits. I get questions from my clients all the time wanting more interesting and easy options for healthy snacks and I thought I would reach out to people I admire and see what they say. A sneak is a personal experience, just a moment in your day to tide you over, satiate and spark a bit of joy.

For the inaugural post, I wanted to introduce you to Chloe List , a woman making crave worthy snacks in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. I’ve been following Chloe for a while and always find inspiration in the meals she creates. The woman really knows how to elevate a rice cake, check out this highlight. Chloe is a self described food obsessed designer who loves grocery stores, cookbook club and making nut butter. I reached out to ask her more about her favourite ways to snack.

What is your favorite time of day for a snack?

Honestly, snacks as meals are my favorite. But I also love a good post-dinner snack.

Are you a sweet or salty snacker?

Somewhere in the middle. I love a good baked good that involves flaky salt, a rice cake with some sort of nut or seed butter with crunchy seeds and flaky salt, or some very, very dark chocolate.

Are there any specific components you need in a snack? ( salt, crunch, protein etc.)

Crunch is very important to me–I’ve realized that I need a little of it to feel satisfied by the food I eat. I also really love snacks that require assembly–they’re more fun and take longer to eat.

Do you have a desert island snack?

I go through major snack phases, so a few months ago I would have said some sort of fancy rice cake creation, but now I’m deep in a dark dark chocolate phase (when it’s approaching 100% cacao it’s equal parts dessert and snack in my book). My current favorites are Raaka’s 100% bar and alter eco’s Super Blackout but I’m always on the lookout for new ones to try.

What snacks do you always have on hand?

I almost always have an assortment of gluten free breads in my freezer (Knead Love out of Brooklyn rules), rice cakes, Mary’s Gone Crackers or Trader Joe’s Norwegian Crispbreads. Same goes for spreads: tahini, sunbutter, cashew cream cheese, coconut yogurt (Cocojune is my favorite), avocado, or chia jam. My favorite thing is coming up with unexpected new combinations using those elements, and then topping with seeds, dukkah, Maldon or anything else crunchy and salty.

Is there a snack you’ve been loving a lot lately?

I am truly obsessed with Amy Chaplin’s latest book, Whole Food Cooking Everyday. There’s a recipe in there for millet and buckwheat bread that is so easy and so good (especially toasted). I love it with just butter and salt, but recently I topped it with tahini, beet sauerkraut and sesame seeds and it was unexpectedly good.
